In honor of Pacific Rim 2 coming out, I've compiled the
fantastic SMG responses on the SomethingAwful thread about Pacific Rim 1. It's a great discussion of fascism and nearby ideologies, Christian symbolism, mecha anime and kaiju cinema, film techniques, and fascism's root as an artistic movement.
It's also useful for interpreting Del Toro's other work, such as his Oscar Best Picture win for "Shape of Water." As SMG points out, all of GDT's movies are about "Nazis fighting monsters."
